Chinese Taipei wins Asiad men team tennis title

TOP seed Chinese Taipei edged Uzbekistan 2-1 to claim the men team tennis gold at the Guangzhou Asian Games today.

The two finalists levelled 1-1 after the two singles of the team events this morning, leaving the final doubles to tell who is the final champion.

Teenagers Yang Tsung-Hua and Yi Chu-Huan carried on their dominance in yesterday's semifinals, and defeated Uzbekistan duo Denis Istomin and Murad Inoyatov 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 15 minutes.

The Chinese Taipei pair, taking a lead right after the openings, broke two serves of their rivals against them in the second set.

In the previous singles, Chinese Taipei's Chen Di smashed Murad Inoyatov 6-2, 6-4, while his compatriot Yang Tsung-Hua lost 4-6, 0-6 to Uzbekistan's top favorite Denis Istomin, currently world number 40.

It is the first time Chinese Taipei has climbed atop the Asiad men team tennis, with a previous best being third in the event.
