Cilic rallies to advance at Monte Carlo

MARIN Cilic of Croatia rallied from a set down to beat Igor Andreev of Russia 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4 yesterday in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Andreev was twice a break up in the deciding set but failed to seal the win.

Cilic next plays either Andreas Seppi of Italy or the winner of yesterday's later match between Marcos Baghdatis and Albert Montanes.

No. 6 Fernando Verdasco of Spain had a far easier win, beating Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-2, 6-1. He will next face either No. 10 Tomas Berdych or Richard Gasquet, who were playing later.

"He just put the ball where he wanted and he was always a step ahead of me," Benneteau said.

In remaining first-round matches, No. 12 Tommy Robredo of Spain, No. 13 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, and No. 15 Jurgen Melzer of Austria all won in straight sets.

Melzer beat Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-3, 6-2; Robredo beat Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-3, 6-3, and Wawrinka won 6-2, 6-4 against Romania's Victor Hanescu.

Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands beat Eduardo Schwank of Argentina 6-3, 7-5 to set up a match against five-time defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain today, when top-seeded Novak Djokovic also plays.

French players Michael Llodra and Florent Serra both advanced to the second round.

On Monday, two-time former champion Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain thrashed countryman Marcel Granollers 6-0, 6-3 in the first round.

The ninth-seeded Ferrero, who was the Monte Carlo champion in 2002 and 2003, broke Granollers' serve five times overall and saved the only break point he faced, in the second set. He next faces Germany's Benjamin Becker.

Berdych advanced when he beat Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-1.

Berdych dropped his serve in the first set but broke Lopez five times and had seven aces. Gasquet beat qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Berdych reached the Sony Ericsson Open final last week, losing to Andy Roddick.

No. 11 David Ferrer of Spain and No. 14 Juan Monaco of Argentina also progressed to the second round in straight sets.

Ferrer won 6-2, 6-4 against Peter Luczak of Australia, while Monaco beat Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 7-5 after breaking his opponent for the sixth time in the match to seal victory.

David Nalbandian of Argentina served eight aces to defeat Andreas Beck of Germany 6-3, 6-1 while German players Philipp Kohlschreiber and Benjamin Becker also won.
