Clijsters To Skip China Open Due To Right Foot Injury
US Open champion Kim Clijsters will miss next month's China Open because of an infection on her right foot.
The three-time major title winner tweeted on Tuesday that she "had a mole removed from under my right foot and the wound got infected" and her Website says "Kim has to cancel for Beijing."
The WTA Tour confirmed that Clijsters has withdrawn from the hardcourt tournament, which runs from October 2 to 10.
Clijsters, No. 5 in this week's WTA rankings, also posted on Twitter a link to a photo showing a red blotch on the bottom of her foot.
Clijsters, 27, said there was "no doubt" that she would be ready for the season-ending championships in Doha, Qatar, which begin on October 26.
Clijsters' withdrawal from Beijing comes after world No. 1 Serena Williams pulled out of tournaments in both Tokyo and Beijing, as she continues to recover from recent surgery on her right foot.
America's multi-grand slam winner Venus Williams, world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Russia's Maria Sharapova are expected to headline the women's draw.
On the men's side, world No. 2 Novak Djokovic of Serbia will defend his title.
