Del Potro, Fish pull out of French Open
WORLD No. 1 Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina has pulled out of next week's French Open after failing to recover from a virus, organizers said yesterday.
Del Potro, who reached the quarterfinals at the claycourt grand slam last year, flew home after losing to France's Benoit Paire in the Italian Open last 16 last week.
"He has withdrawn," a French Federation spokesman said in Paris, confirming Argentine media reports.
"I am sad to miss such an important tournament, one that you always dream of winning," Del Potro was quoted as saying.
Del Potro is the second top-10 player to withdraw from the French Open, which starts on Sunday at Roland Garros, after Briton Andy Murray announced he would miss the event because of a back injury.
Former world No. 7 Mardy Fish, 41st in the ATP rankings, and fellow American Brian Baker, 71st, have also pulled out.
Organizers said yesterday that Baker has not recovered from a right knee operation and Fish is unfit due to heart problems. They will be replaced in tomorrow's draw by Joao Sousa of Portugal and Guido Pella of Argentina.
John Millan, an Australian wildcard entry, withdrew because of a shoulder injury and will be replaced by Nick Kyrgios of Australia.
In the women's draw, Chan Yung-jan (illness), Alexandra Dulgheru (right wrist injury) and Lara Arruabarrena (mononucleosis) have also withdrawn. They will be replaced by Shahar Peer, Tatjana Maria and Nina Bratchikova.
