Djokovic out of Davis doubles

Serbia’s world No. 2 Novak Djokovic was left out of yesterday’s doubles in the Davis Cup final against holder Czech Republic, with Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac named to play against Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek.

The teams were locked at 1-1 after Friday’s opening singles in Belgrade, with Djokovic beating Stepanek in straight sets before Berdych redressed the balance against late rookie replacement Dusan Lajovic, who stepped in for the injured Janko Tipsarevic.

Djokovic faces Berdych in today’s opening reverse singles before world No. 117 Lajovic takes on Stepanek in a potentially decisive fifth rubber at the imposing Kombank Arena.

With their formidable 13-1 record in Davis Cup doubles, Berdych and Stepanek have a chance to give the Czechs the lead in the best-of-five series.

The Czechs are vying to become the first nation to retain the trophy since Spain won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009, while host Serbia is bidding for its second cup after winning it at the same venue in 2010.

Djokovic overcame some early nerves to beat Stepanek 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 in the first singles on Friday and Berdych then swept past Lajovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 on the indoor hardcourt.

Djokovic earned his 23rd consecutive victory since losing to Rafael Nadal in the US Open final in September.
