Djokovic reaches Dubai semifinals with walkover

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia moved on to the semifinals of the Dubai Championships yesterday when quarterfinal opponent Mikhail Youzhny of Russia withdrew because of illness.

Djokovic will next face either fourth-seeded Swiss Roger Federer or Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in today’s semifinals.

Philipp Kohlschreiber also reached the last four after seeing off Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri 6-2, 6-3. The German will play Czech third seed Tomas Berdych or Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the fifth seed, for a place in the final.

On Thursday, Djokovic swept to a 6-1, 6-3 win over 51st-ranked Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in just 57 minutes, but Federer had to see off a serious challenge from 48th-ranked Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic before coming through 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

Rosol, meanwhile, upset eighth-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 6-4, 7-6 (4).

In Acapulco, Andy Murray reached the quarterfinals of the Mexican Open with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Portugal’s Joao Sousa yesterday.

The seventh-ranked Murray needed three sets in the first round to beat Spaniard Pablo Andujar, but put in a more authoritative performance against Sousa and set up a clash with France’s Gilles Simon in the last eight.

Top seed David Ferrer beat Spanish compatriot Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (1), 6-2 to advance to his fifth-straight Mexican Open quarterfinal.

Ferrer, trying to win his fourth title on Mexican soil, will play South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, who ousted American Sam Querrey, 7-6 (2), 6-4.

“I believe ‘Feli’ (Lopez) had several chances in the first set but didn’t take advantage of them”, Ferrer said. “It was a tough one for me because he’s a very smart player and knows my game”.

Also on Wednesday, Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov beat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-4 and Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic defeated Dudi Sela of Israel 7-6 (4), 6-2.

On the women’s side, Slovak top seed Dominika Cibulkova reached the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

Also, China’s Zhang Shuai was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak.
