Djokovic shakes rust off in victory
Defending champion Novak Djokovic wore down Lukas Lacko to win his first competitive match under new coach Boris Becker at the Australian Open yesterday.
The Serbian world No. 2, bidding to win a fourth consecutive Australian title and fifth overall, had to work hard to subdue the 96th-ranked Slovak.
But after taking the second set in a tiebreaker, he swept to victory 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-1 in 1 hour 50 minutes. He will face Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer in the next round.
Djokovic looked far from his best and made 30 unforced errors.
“It’s my first competitive match this season after a five to six week break and I was rusty in the first two sets,” Djokovic said.
Eighth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka advanced when Andrey Golubev retired with an injured left leg.
Alex Bogomolov Jr. quit after losing two sets to No. 15 Fabio Fognini and No. 12-seeded Tommy Haas pulled out when he was down a set and a break against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Third-ranked David Ferrer opened with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Colombia’s Alejandro Gonzalez and No. 7 Tomas Berdych beat Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
Other men advancing included No. 9 Richard Gasquet, No. 14 Mikhail Youzhny, No. 19 Kevin Anderson, No. 23 Ernests Gulbis, No. 29 Jeremy Chardy, No. 32 Ivan Dodig and Sam Querrey.
