Djokovic tops Federer to make Paris Masters final

Novak Djokovic won his 16th straight match by rallying from a set and a break down to defeat Roger Federer 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 yesterday in the semifinals of the Paris Masters.

Serb Djokovic next plays either top-seeded Rafael Nadal or defending champion David Ferrer, both of Spain.

This was the 30th meeting between Djokovic and Federer but the first this year.

Federer had the initiative in the first set and broke Djokovic again to start the second. But the Serb broke right back and took control of the match with another break midway through the set.

The second-seeded Serb broke Federer twice in the final set and clinched the victory with a forehand winner.

Djokovic still has a slim chance to finish the season ahead of No. 1 Nadal in the world rankings.

Meanwhile, Nadal will face Ferrer at this week’s ATP World Tour Finals in London, with last year’s champion Djokovic and runner-up Federer drawn in the second group yesterday.

Nadal, featuring for the sixth time but seeking a maiden title at the season-ending event, will also play against seventh-ranked Czech Tomas Berdych and eighth-ranked Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in Group A.

Djokovic, who beat Federer last year at London’s O2 Arena to claim his second Tour Finals crown, was drawn in Group B along with fifth-ranked Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro and ninth-ranked Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Six-time champion Federer, ranked sixth, will feature for the 12th consecutive year at the event where the only big name missing will be Briton Andy Murray, who is recovering from back surgery.
