Dulgheru faces Zheng in Warsaw final
DEFENDING champion Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania will face fifth-seeded Zheng Jie of China in the US$600,000 Warsaw Open final today.
Unseeded Dulgheru ousted third-seeded Li Na of China 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the first semifinal in the Polish capital yesterday.
Hours later, Zheng Jie beat Greta Arn of Hungary 6-4, 7-5.
In Strasbourg, France, Maria Sharapova beat Julia Goerges of Germany 7-6 (2), 6-1 yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the Strasbourg International.
The top-seeded Russian will next face Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain who defeated Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 7-5.
Both quarterfinals were interrupted by rain on Thursday. Sharapova was leading 3-2 while the fifth-seeded Spaniard took the first set.
Sharapova is looking to get back to her best before the start of the French Open after recovering from a right elbow injury.
On Thursday, Vania King of the United States reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Anastasia Rodionova.
King, who upset second-seeded Elena Vesnina in the first round, broke her opponent six times in a match where both players struggled to hold serve. She will next play Germany's Kristina Barrois, who defeated seventh-seeded Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 6-1, 7-5.
Barrois ended Sevastova's run of seven consecutive victories that saw her claim her first Tour win, in Estoril earlier this month.
In Nice, France, Leonardo Mayer of Argentina beat a top-30 players for the first time in almost a year when he edged fifth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the Open de Nice quarterfinals on Thursday.
Mayer hadn't beaten anyone in the top 30 since last year's French Open, where he beat American James Blake in the first round.
In his second career semifinals, the 59th-ranked Mayer will meet second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain, who struggled to beat Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4.
Verdasco won his second title of the year at Barcelona last month and is considered a contender to make a deep run at the French Open, which starts in Paris tomorrow.
Third-seeded Gael Monfils of France lost 6-7 (2), 2-6 to Potito Starace of Italy, who beat him for the third time in four meetings on clay.
Starace will play his second semifinal this year, against another Frenchman, Richard Gasquet, who downed Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-4, 6-2.
