Favorites Doi, Wickmayer depart
TOP seed Misaki Doi and defending champion Yanina Wickmayer tumbled out of the Japan Women’s Open tournament at the first hurdle yesterday.
Local favorite Doi, the world No. 35, was stunned 7-5, 6-3 by Aliaksandra Sasnovich while Belgian Wickmayer also failed to win a set as she went down 6-1, 7-6 to Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in Tokyo.
“It’s a real pity to let it slip as I don’t get to play in Japan much,” said Doi.
“The games were all tight but I was never able to get momentum. It’s really disappointing.”
Wickmayer had no answer to Golubic’s variety of spin and clever use of angles on a day when wet weather forced organizers to close the center court roof.
In other matches, Swedish fourth seed Johanna Larsson beat Germany’s Sabine Lisicki 6-3, 6-2 while Czech Katerina Siniakova overpowered another German, Antonia Lottner, 6-1, 6-4.
Also, South Korea’s Jang Su-jeong beat Zheng Saisai of China 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
