Federer back as world No. 2 ahead of US Open
Five-time winner Roger Federer will go into next week鈥檚 US Open as the world No. 2 after beating Novak Djokovic 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati at the weekend.
Yesterday鈥檚 new ATP rankings put the Swiss back in front of Britain鈥檚 Andy Murray, the player he beat in the Cincinnati semifinals. It means Federer, 34, who last won the US Open in 2008, cannot meet world No. 1 Djokovic until the final. Simona Halep is also back up to second in the WTA rankings following her run to the final in Cincinnati. The Romanian, who lost to world No. 1 Serena Williams 3-6, 6-7 (5) on Sunday, nudges ahead of Maria Sharapova, who missed the tournament due to injury.
