Federer dumps Youzhny to set up final with Haas
ROGER Federer will be chasing a sixth Gerry Weber Open title after setting up a final showdown with fellow 30-something Tommy Haas in Halle, Germany, yesterday.
The 16-time grand slam winner raced into his seventh Halle final with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Mikhail Youzhny.
Federer wasted little time converting four of his eight break points to maintain a perfect record of 13 wins in 13 matches against the Russian.
"Mikhail started a bit slow but I think I took advantage of it and after that I was able to get on a roll," the Swiss No. 2 seed said. "I'm obviously excited to be a finalist here again."
Federer will face wildcard Haas today after the German beat Rafael Nadal's conqueror Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (5), 7-5.
"It's always tricky playing Germans here in the final, but I'm looking forward to that match," said Federer, , who was beaten by Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals at the French Open last week.
Today's match will be the first ATP final to feature two 30-somethings since Spain's Carlos Moya beat Andrei Pavel of Romania in the 2007 Umag final.
In Bad Gastien, Austria, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium followed Alize Cornet of France into the Gastein Ladies final after defeating Mandy Minella 7-6 (3), 6-3 yesterday.
After a tight opening set, the second-seeded Wickmayer broke Luxembourg's Minella three times in the second.
The 37th-ranked Wickmayer won one of her three career titles in Austria, the 2009 Generali Ladies in Linz.
Earlier, the seventh-seeded Cornet, who is looking for her second title after winning in Budapest four years ago, downed Ksenia Pervak of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-2.
The third-seeded Pervak dropped all of her eight service games. She lost in the semifinals last year.
