Federer quits next month's ATP tournament in Shanghai
LOCAL tennis fans are disappointed that Roger Federer has decided to quit the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters next month for health reasons, the tournament organizer said today.
The 16-time Grand Slam champion said he had to give more consideration to his health as he had turned 30 this year and should meet his Chinese friends in Shanghai next fall.
The move was to prolong his career, said his agent.
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has approved Federer's request, according to the local organizer.
"After consulting with my team, I've decided, unfortunately, to pull out from the Shanghai Rolex Masters to take some necessary time to rest and recuperate after a long summer," said Federer. "I have some nagging injuries that I need to address and I look forward to returning to the ATP World Tour as soon as possible."
Federer won the Masters Cup twice in Shanghai in 2006 and 2007 and was the runner-up in last year's Shanghai Rolex Masters after he lost 0-2 to Andy Murray in the final.
"I have very fond memories of Shanghai so I will miss this amazing tournament and all my loyal Chinese fans, but I look forward to returning to China next fall," he said.
