Ferrer retains title, Djokovic sizzles
TOP seed David Ferrer of Spain defeated compatriot Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 6-2 to defend his Mexican Open title in Acapulco on Saturday.
It was Ferrer's 11th career title and second Mexican Open, after winning the same event here last year, and extends his career head-to-head record to 6-0 against Almagro.
Ferrer converted the first six break points he earned in the final and was only denied his seventh when Almagro made a clutch forehand that landed on the line to save a match point in the seventh game of the third set.
In contrast, Almagro could only make four of 13 break chances.
Ferrer has started the season with 14 wins from 16 matches, a record that includes titles in Auckland, New Zealand and Acapulco, and a semifinal run at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Almagro, the third seed, came into the final on the back of a 13-match winning streak after claiming titles in Argentina and Brazil.

In Dubai, defending champion Novak Djokovic won his third consecutive title at the Dubai Championships when he defeated top seed Roger Federer 6-3, 6-3 in just 71 minutes on Saturday.
It was the 20th title of his career and his second of the year after the Australian Open in January.
The second seeded Serbian is the only player apart from four-time champion Federer to have won the title three times, following the Swiss star's victories in 2003-5 and 2007.
He has now won 15 straight matches in Dubai and is enjoying a career-best 14-match winning streak dating back to December's Davis Cup final.
"I guess I rose to the occasion," Djokovic told reporters. "I was aware of the challenge waiting for me on the court and I was aware of the fact that I needed to be on top of my game in order to beat Roger."
