Ferrer wins Auckland event for third straight year, fourth overall
WORLD No. 5 and top seed David Ferrer beat second-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (5), 6-1 yesterday to win the Heineken Open title for the third-straight year and fourth time overall in Auckland, New Zealand.
Ferrer matched the record of the great Australian Roy Emerson who won the Auckland singles crown in 1960, 1965, 1966 and 1967. Spain's Ferrer claimed the title for the first time in 2007 and now in the past three years.
Ferrer received an e-mail from Emerson just before the final, wishing him well in his effort to equal his record. The Spaniard, who heads now to the Australian Open, said he would definitely return in 2014 to try and achieve a record fifth win.
"I'm so happy," Ferrer said. "It was amazing for me to win here four times. Now I can say this is my favorite tournament."
The win gave Ferrer the 19th singles title of his career and his eighth in the past 12 months. His win in Auckland last January gave him the first of seven singles titles he won in eight finals appearances in 2012.
Kohlschreiber, the world No. 19, was attempting to win the Heineken Open for the second time after his victory in 2008 and to add the eighth singles title of his career. Both players were contesting the Auckland tournament for the ninth time.
In women's action, Russia's Elena Vesnina captured her first WTA title by beating defending champion Mona Barthel 6-3, 6-4 yesterday in the final of the Hobart International in Australia.
The 68th-ranked, unseeded Vesnina ended Barthel's winning run of 12-straight matches in Hobart, and finally clinched her first title after five previous losses in finals.
In Melbourne, former No. 1-ranked Lleyton Hewitt turned back the clock with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Juan Martin del Potro yesterday in the final of the Kooyong classic invitational exhibition tournament.
