Ferrer wins, Tomic gives hope to Aussies
TOP-SEEDED David Ferrer won the Auckland Open singles title for the third time when he beat unseeded Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4 in yesterday final.
World No. 5 Ferrer geared up for the Australian Open with an impressive performance, dropping only one set in four matches to add this year's title, the 12th of his career, to victories in Auckland in 2007 and last year.
Ferrer beat Lukas Rosol, Alejandro Falla and third-seeded compatriot Fernando Verdasco on the way to the final in which he overpowered the 68th-ranked Rochus with his powerful serve and forehand. He served nine aces and won 81 percent of first serve points.
Rochus, who reached the Auckland final for the second time seven years after the first, played three three-setters en-route to the title match. He was also runner-up in 2005.
Ferrer became the third player after New Zealander Onny Parun and the great Australian Roy Emerson to win the Auckland title three times.
"I feel tired, very tired. I ran a lot this week," Ferrer said. "But it's the first time I've won three times in the same tournament and so this is my favorite tournament. "For me to win a tournament three times is very special."
In Melbourne, Australia's Bernard Tomic created a rod for his own back by defeating world No. 8 Mardy Fish 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to win the Kooyong Classic yesterday.
The 19-year-old's impressive performance in the eight-man invitational warm-up tournament two days before the Australian Open is sure to whip local fans into a frenzy over the prospect of a genuine men's contender at Melbourne Park.
The first teenager to win at Kooyong Lawn Tennis club, Tomic upset French world No. 15 Gael Monfils and seventh-ranked Czech Tomas Berdych on the way to the final.
Tomic, ranked No. 37 in the world, now turns his attention to a tricky first round encounter at Melbourne Park on Monday against 22nd seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain, a former Australian Open semifinalist.
"There's only three or four guys on tour who can play all day and he's one of them," Tomic told reporters. "I'll need to come out, be aggressive and be fast like the first few matches I was playing at Kooyong and if I play like that, and to his backhand corner deep, I think he can't really hurt me."
Elsewhere, qualifier Mona Barthel of Germany won her eighth straight match at the Hobart International, defeating top-seeded Yanina Wickmayer 6-1, 6-2 for her first WTA Tour title.
The 21-year-old Barthel, ranked 64th, closed with an ace on match point.
