Ferrero doubtful for Australian Open
FORMER world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero could miss next week's Australian Open after he was forced out of the Auckland Open in New Zealand yesterday when he rolled his right ankle in a match against qualifier Michael Lammer.
The Spaniard is the second big name injury withdrawal from the event at the Auckland Tennis Centre after former top 10 player David Nalbandian of Argentina pulled out with an abdominal strain on Monday without playing a match.
Nalbandian withdrew from the year's first grand slam yesterday.
The third-seeded Ferrero, who had received a first round bye, spent barely 20 minutes on court against Switzerland's Lammer before injuring his heavily strapped right ankle while trailing 1-3.
After receiving treatment and additional strapping courtside, he returned but withdrew when he was unable to return serve.
"It's disappointing to get injured in the first tournament and I have some doubts about the tournament in Australia. I will try to recover but I don't know," Ferrero said.
"They say it's not too bad, I will have to wait three or four days with some ice, take some anti-inflammatories and see how it goes. I want to play over there so I will do everything in my power to make it, but we'll see. I cannot tell you now."
