Fish tastes second straight success
MARDY Fish reeled in second seed John Isner 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 to clinch the Atlanta Championships on Sunday and win his second successive ATP title.
Fish, who won the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport two weeks ago, extended his winning streak to 10 matches after dominating the third-set tiebreak.
"This is as top as I've ever been," Fish told reporters.
"I've never won two tournaments in one year, I've never won two tournaments in a row, and on the ATP tour, I've never won 10 matches in a row. It's probably as good as it's been."
Isner had been bidding for his second title of the season after winning in Auckland earlier this year, and looked to have the momentum after claiming the first set. But Fish responded with a break late in the second and again early in the third.
Isner broke back immediately in the decider and threatened to break his fellow American again in the ninth game, but fell short and ended up conceding a decisive 4-0 lead in the tiebreak.
Fish, appearing in his third final in his past four tournaments, mowed through the final three points to complete victory and continue his brilliant run.
In Hamburg, Andrey Golubev became the first Kazakhstan player to win an ATP tour title, beating third-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-3, 7-5 in the German Open final on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Golubev overwhelmed the 15th-ranked Melzer, a French Open semifinalist, with powerful shots from the baseline to claim the clay court event.
He did not drop serve, saving five breakpoint opportunities, and broke Melzer once in each set.
The 82nd-ranked Golubev was born in Russia but became a Kazakhstan citizen in June 2008.
In Portoroz, Anna Chakvetadze of Russia beat Johanna Larsson of Sweden 6-1, 6-2 in the Slovenia Open final to win her first WTA Tour title in almost 2? years.
Chakvetadze broke twice in each set against Larsson, who was playing in her first final and who missed all three breakpoint chances in the second set.
Chakvetadze now has eight WTA Tour titles, her previous last one coming in Paris in February, 2008.
A top-five player in 2007, Chakvetadze has fallen to No. 103 in the rankings.
