France beats Germany to make Davis Cup last 8
FRANCE qualified for the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup after taking an unassailable 3-0 lead over Germany in Frankfurt yesterday.
After Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils beat Jan-Lennard Struff and Philipp Kohlschreiber, respectively, on Friday, the doubles pairing of Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut made it 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Benjamin Becker and Andre Begemann.
On Friday, Serbia carved out a 2-0 lead over Croatia while Britain led the United States by the same score and holder Switzerland was tied with Belgium.
Roared on by a passionate 3,000 crowd, who also applauded Croatia’s national anthem, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic put 2010 winner Serbia ahead with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 whitewash of Mate Delic before Viktor Troicki staged a magnificent comeback to beat 18-year-old Borna Coric in five sets at the Kraljevo Arena.
Trailing by two sets and 2-0 in the third, Troicki secured a 4-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory over a tired Coric.
