Freak injury ends it for Wozniacki
Caroline Wozniacki lamented her 鈥渟hitty鈥 recent few months yesterday after an unlucky incident involving a bread knife brought her season to an abrupt halt.
The former world No. 1 was trailing Svetlana Kuznetsova 5-7, 2-2 at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, south China鈥檚 Guangdong Province, when she retired and later withdrew from the tournament.
According to the WTA Insider Twitter account, Wozniacki cut her finger badly with a bread knife from room service and was unable to hold her racquet properly, prompting the wrist injury.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a really, really frustrating, shitty second half of the year. Basically just been falling apart physically,鈥 she was quoted as saying by the WTA-linked account.
Dane Wozniacki, 25, won in Malaysia during a positive start to the season but highlights have become few and far between as the year unfolded.
She isn鈥檛 the only star to fall foul of room service this week 鈥 coincidentally her former fiance, golfer Rory McIlroy, went down with food poisoning from a club sandwich in Shanghai.
Wozniacki鈥檚 withdrawal could also affect Kuznetsova鈥檚 chances of qualifying from Group D, as she was relying on the world No. 17 beating Roberta Vinci today.
In Wozniacki鈥檚 absence, Italy鈥檚 Vinci will play alternate Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, the world No. 28 from Slovakia.
Earlier, Venus Williams came from a set down against Chinese No. 1 Zheng Saisai to become the first player to reach the semifinals at the tournament鈥檚 inaugural edition.
Williams, the top seed and seven-time grand slam winner, hit back after losing first set against 75th-ranked wildcard Zheng to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
In Group C, Czech third seed Karolina Pliskova beat Italy鈥檚 Sara Errani 6-0, 6-3.
In Paris, Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori retired from the Paris Masters yesterday with a suspected neck injury in his third-round match against Frenchman Richard Gasquet, 10 days before the start of the ATP World Tour finals.
Nishikori was trailing 6-7 (3), 1-4 when he threw in the towel. Gasquet, the 10th seed, will now play British second seed Andy Murray.
Nishikori had just been treated by the physiotherapist for back pain at the changeover.
The Japanese is one of eight players qualified for the World Tour finals, which will be played at the O2 Arena in London during November 15-22.
Earlier, Murray put down a warning for the Davis Cup final when he dismantled David Goffin 6-1, 6-0 in awe-inspiring fashion to advance into the last eight.
Three weeks before Britain and Belgium face off in the Davis Cup final on clay in Ghent, Murray had just too much pace for the 16th seed on the Bercy hardcourt.
Goffin can only hope the red dust will slow down world No. 3 Murray in the November 27-29 tie after the Scot had the Belgian chasing from corner to corner throughout a one-sided contest.
