French Open favorite Halep rated only 鈥50-50鈥 to play
WORLD No. 4 Simona Halep says she has only a “50-50” chance of being fit for the French Open after injuring her ankle during the Italian Open final last week in Rome.
The Romanian posted a composite photograph on her Instagram account of her having treatment on the injury.
“Arriving early in Paris for treatment. The MRI scan shows a torn ligament from the fall in Roma,” the 2014 French Open finalist said. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed for RG (Roland Garros) and will do everything possible to be ready. Doctors say it’s 50/50 at the moment but it’s made good improvement since Sunday. We are remaining very positive.”
With Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova all absent, Halep is one of the favorites to win the title held on May 28-June 11.
She won the title in Madrid and looked on course to follow that up in Rome but stumbled early in the final against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and went on to lose in three sets.
In Switzerland, third-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas lost in the second round of the Geneva Open yesterday, falling to Andrey Kuznetsov 5-7, 1-6.
Ramos-Vinolas has struggled since beating top-ranked Andy Murray en route to reaching the Monte Carlo Masters final last month.
The 20th-ranked Spaniard has lost to lower-ranked opponents in his opening match at three straight tournaments.
Kuznetsov, a Russian ranked No. 85, advanced to the quarter-finals with the victory. Also, sixth-seeded Sam Querrey defeated 84th-ranked Franko Skugor 6-2, 6-2, Steve Johnson beat Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-1.
