Germany, Australia into Fed Cup semis
Germany reached the semifinals of the Fed Cup yesterday after Angelique Kerber won the first reverse singles to clinch the first-round series against Slovakia 3-0.
Ninth-ranked Kerber defeated Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova 6-3, 7-6 (5) on the indoor hardcourt at Bratislava’s National Tennis Center for the first German victory in the Fed Cup World Group since 2002.
Kerber converted her first match point in a tiebreaker when Cibulkova’s forehand went wide.
Kerber broke Cibulkova three times in the opening set which she clinched with a forehand winner.
Germany took a commanding lead 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series on Saturday after Kerber overcame Daniela Hantuchova 7-6 (9), 6-1 and Andrea Petkovic upset Cibulkova 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
Next up for Germany, which last won the Fed Cup in 1992, will be a semifinal matchup against Australia, which defeated an under-strength Russia team 4-0 in Hobart, Tasmania, earlier yesterday.
Sam Stosur beat Victoria Kan 6-2, 6-3 to give the host a winning 3-0 lead, lifting the Australians into the semifinals for the first time in 20 years.
Stosur, the world No. 16 and former US Open champion, had too much power for 158th-ranked Kan, winning 24 of 25 points on first serve.
Stosur and Casey Dellacqua had given Australia a 2-0 lead on Saturday when they easily won their opening singles.
Australia last played in a Fed Cup semifinal in 1993 on its way to the final against Spain. Russia, which made the final last year, is without its 13 top-ranked players.
Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty later combined to beat Irina Khromacheva and Valeria Solovyeva 6-1, 6-3 in the doubles. The second reverse singles was not played.
