Goerges, Azarenka in Madrid semis, Murray out
JULIA Goerges continued her impressive run on clay when she brushed aside Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-2 yesterday to claim a place in the last four of the Madrid Open.
The rangy, big-serving German climbed to 27th in the rankings following her win against world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the Stuttgart final last month.
She followed that up by knocking the Dane out in the third round in Madrid on Thursday on her debut in the Spanish capital.
A break of the Pavlyuchenkova serve in the first set and two in the second were enough to see Goerges through to the semifinals, where she will play fourth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.
The Belarussian dropped her first set of the week against unseeded Czech Lucie Safarova before coming through 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Goerges sealed victory against world No. 21 Pavlyuchenkova on her first match point with a forehand winner down the line before shrieking with delight and pumping a fist.
Azarenka will attempt to maintain her blistering form at the Magic Box arena when she plays her quarterfinal against Safarova.
Azarenka won back-to-back titles in Miami and Marbella at the end of March and beginning of April. The 21-year-old can climb one place to No. 4 in the rankings if she reaches tomorrow's final.
In a late quarterfinal yesterday, sixth seed Li Na of China plays unseeded American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and 16th-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova takes on Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.
On Thursday, world No. 4 Andy Murray crashed out of the Madrid Open when he was beaten 4-6, 2-6 by unseeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in the third round.
Briton Murray, who is returning from an elbow injury that prevented him playing at last month's Barcelona Open, had his serve broken once in the first set and twice in the second by the stylish left-hander in the pair's first meeting.
Bellucci, ranked 36, saved all three break points he faced on the clay and sealed victory on his first match point when Murray netted a backhand.
Murray, who will now head to Italy for next week's Rome Masters, was not too disheartened with the defeat and said he had to be realistic about his chances in Madrid after his injury layoff.
