Goerges upsets Stosur to reach Stuttgart final
JULIA Goerges upset last year's runner-up Sam Stosur 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 yesterday to reach the final of the Porsche Grand Prix, her first final in a WTA Premier Event.
Goerges broke the fifth-seeded Australian's serve to win in two hours, 16 minutes and became the first German in the Stuttgart final since Anke Huber in 1996.
By reaching the final, Goerges will also break into the top 30 in the world rankings, giving Germany two places that high for the first time since August 1999. The other one is Andrea Petkovic.
Goerges rode her big serve to rally past Stosur, whom she also beat in Tokyo last year.
She will now play either world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark or Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, who were playing later.
"To beat a player like Stosur is just unbelievable," the world No. 32 said in a courtside interview.
"And to do that in front of a home crowd is even better. I just don't have the words to describe how happy I am," a beaming Goerges, 22, said as the home crowd gave her a standing ovation.
In Barcelona, Spain, David Ferrer beat Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-4 yesterday to advance to his third Barcelona Open final, and a rematch with top seed and compatriot Rafael Nadal.
"I am very happy (to be in the finals)," Ferrer said. "Barcelona is the tournament that most motivates me, it is the tournament I most want to win."
Nadal, who beat Ferrer last weekend in the Monte Carlo Masters final, brushed aside unseeded Croatian Ivan Dodig 6-3, 6-2.
Ferrer extended his unbeaten record to 7-0 against Almagro, who will enter the top 10 of the ATP rankings after the tournament finishes.
