Goffin seals Belgium’s Davis Cup semifinal berth
BELGIUM’S David Goffin defeated Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi in straight sets to seal a 3-1 Davis Cup victory for the hosts in Charleroi and a semifinal showdown with Australia.
Goffin came through 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to ensure a final four meeting between the 2015 runner-up and Australia which beat the United States 3-2 in Brisbane.
It was the second victory by Goffin of the weekend, having beaten Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 on Friday after Darcis beat Lorenzi 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 (4).
But Italy had demonstrated the fighting spirit which saw it knock out defending champions Argentina in the first round to stay alive in its quarterfinal on Saturday with a thrilling doubles win.
Belgian Steve Darcis was meeting Seppi in the final dead rubber later.
Earlier in Brisbane, Australia advanced to the semifinals after Nick Kyrgios beat late substitute Sam Querrey of the United States 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4 in the first reverse singles match, clinching the quarterfinal 3-1 with a match to spare.
On a hardcourts at Pat Rafter Arena, Kyrgios and his singles partner Jordan Thompson gave Australia a 2-0 lead on Friday before the Americans staved off elimination on Saturday when Jack Sock, who lost to Thompson on Friday, and partner Steve Johnson beat Sam Groth and John Peers 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Querrey was supposed to be Johnson’s doubles partner, but American captain Jim Courier, who said it would take “monstrous effort” for the Americans to win the tie, pulled a swap, putting Sock into doubles and allowing Querrey to be fresh for Kyrgios.
Serbia and France won their Davis Cup quarterfinals on Saturday to set up their first match since the 2010 final. France will host the semifinal in September.
