Haas makes comeback from injury
FORMER world No. 2 Tommy Haas made his comeback on Tuesday after missing 14 months through injury when he competed in the doubles event at the BMW Open in Munich.
The 33-year-old German, who had reached his career-high ranking in May 2002 and played in four grand slam semifinals, has won 12 singles titles but has been plagued by injuries for much of his career.
Haas, who has also taken on US nationality, partnered close friend and Florida neighbor Czech Radek Stepanek but lost to Sweden's Simon Aspelin and Australian Paul Hanley 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
"I would have also liked to play in the singles but I have not reached that point yet," Haas told reporters. "It was good experience but we came up a bit short."
He had last played on February 22, 2010 at the Delray Beach International, following which he underwent hip and elbow surgery.
Second-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka was upset by German wildcard Dustin Brown 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-5 in the first round. Wawrinka, making his debut in Munich, was the only seed not to win his opener.
Also through were third-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia, No. 5 Florian Mayer of Germany, No. 7 Nikolay Davydenko and No. 8 Philip Kohlschreiber of Germany.
Cilic hit 11 aces past Simone Bolelli to beat the Italian 7-5, 7-6 (4). Theirs was a match of former finalists, Cilic last year and Bolelli in 2008.
Davydenko, one of three past champions in the field, beat fellow Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 6-1, 7-6 (4), and Kohlschreiber, the last local winner in 2007, routed Colombian qualifier Robert Farah 6-3, 6-1.
In Belgrade, Ricardo Mello of Brazil upset last year's finalist John Isner of the United States 6-4, 7-6 (4) on Tuesday in the first round of the Serbia Open, while former fifth-ranked Fernando Gonzalez of Chile made a winning return from an eight-month injury layoff.
Gonzalez beat qualifier Martin Klizan of Slovakia 6-2, 6-4 after recovering from hip surgery. The 30-year-old Gonzalez dominated the first set, although both players struggled to hold serve in the second. Klizan double-faulted on Gonzalez's second match point. Gonzalez will next play Feliciano Lopez of Spain who upset eighth-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco 6-4, 7-5.
