Halep lifts Shenzhen crown with romp over Bacsinszky
TOP seed Simona Halep of Romania roared to victory yesterday in the WTA Shenzhen Open final, downing Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets.
Halep, the No. 1 seed and third-ranked female player in the world, dispatched eighth-seeded Bacsinszky 6-2, 6-2 in 62 minutes in the US$500,000 tournament to score her ninth WTA title.
“I wasn’t feeling very well before the match — I was a little bit sick — so I told myself I have nothing to lose, just go on court, be relaxed, stay focused and fight for every point,” Halep said in remarks posted on the WTA website.
“It worked and I felt really relaxed today,” she said. “I’m happy I could play better day by day.
“I’m looking forward to playing like today in the next tournament, maybe even better.”
In Australia, Maria Sharapova claimed her 34th career title and closed the gap on the No. 1 ranking with a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 win over Ana Ivanovic yesterday in the Brisbane International final.
The top-seeded Sharapova raced to 4-1 lead and had set points in the 11th game but No. 2-seeded Ivanovic fought back to take the hour-long set in a tiebreaker.
Sharapova earned early service breaks in the next two sets and held for victory, giving her a chance to overhaul Serena Williams for top spot in the rankings depending on results at the Australian Open, which starts on January 19.
On the men’s side‚ Roger Federer has a chance to go into the Australian Open with 1,000 career match wins to his credit after beating fourth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-2 yesterday to reach the final of the Brisbane International.
He will face third-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada in the final.
