Hantuchova basks in Pattaya triumph
FOURTH-SEEDED Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia claimed her first title in four years after she outclassed Italian Sara Errani 6-0, 6-2 in the Pattaya Open final in south Thailand yesterday.
The 32th-ranked Slovak collected her fourth career title, her first since Linz, Austria, in 2007. The victory improves Hantuchova's record against the Italian to 3-1.
"It was a great match," Hantuchova said. "I didn't lose a set five matches in a row which is good news. It shows that I'm really focused and physically and mentally strong in this kind of condition."
Hantuchova used her forehand to pressure Errani from the start and the 27-year-old never let her opponent into the match as she raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set.
She hit her first two match points into the net but converted the third when Errani's forehand went long.
Errani got on the scoreboard with a break to start the second set but was unable to maintain the momentum and dropped the next four games to trail 1-4. The Italian then held serve to win just her second game of the match before Hantuchova wrapped up the match in 76 minutes with a forehand winner down the line.
In Costa do Sauipe, Brazil, Nicolas Almagro of Spain won his eighth ATP title, defeating Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the final of the Brazil Open on Saturday.
The Spaniard also won this event in 2008 and has won all eight of his tournament titles on clay. Dolgopolov, who reached the quarterfinals last month in the Australian Open, was appearing in his first ATP final.
The four-tournament Latin American circuit moves to Buenos Aires, Argentina, this week before concluding in Acapulco, Mexico. The first tournament in Chile was won by Spaniard Tommy Robredo last week.
In San Jose, California, defending champion Fernando Verdasco ended Juan Martin del Potro's hopes of reaching a first final following a long injury layoff with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the semifinals of the SAP Open on Saturday.
The left-handed Spaniard used a lethal yet cool-headed attack to subdue 2009 US Open champion Del Potro, who was contesting only his 10th match since the Argentine underwent wrist surgery early last year.
Verdasco will play young Canadian sensation Milos Raonic in the final. The 20-year-old Raonic advanced without playing when French second seed Gael Monfils withdrew with a wrist injury.
