Impressive Melzer into Thailand Open quarters
JURGEN Melzer of Austria improved the best season of his career when he beat Dudi Sela of Israel 6-3, 6-4 to reach his 10th quarterfinals this year at the Thailand Open in Nonthaburi, outside Bangkok, yesterday.
The third-seeded Melzer, a semifinalist here last year, downed Sela for the third time this year.
"Dudi is a tough opponent. He makes you play a lot of balls. He is very dangerous," said the 13th-ranked Melzer. "I'm pleased with the way I played today."
In today's quarterfinals he will meet either No. 7-seeded Viktor Troicki of Serbia or Jarkko Nieminen of Finland.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain outlasted Florent Serra of France 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5 in 2 hours, 43 minutes to avenge a quarterfinal loss in April in the Casablanca quarterfinals.
Also, fourth seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia got the better of Germany's Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-4 in a late second-round match.
In Kuala Lumpur, second seed Nikolay Davydenko was sent packing in the second round of the Malaysian Open by Russian compatriot Igor Andreev.
Davydenko lost 6-7 (5), 7-5, 3-6 to become the highest seeded casualty at the tournament, which also lost seventh seed Sergiy Stakhovsky. The Ukrainian was beaten 7-6 (8), 6-7 (9), 3-6 by unseeded and unheralded Canadian Milos Raonic
Sixth-seeded Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis had an easy passage, however, beating Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 7-5, 7-5.
Fourth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny also struggled before the Russian rallied past another Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 in their second-round encounter.
Earlier, Spain's David Ferrer, the fifth seed, kicked off his tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 beating of Australian Bernard Tomic in the first round.
