Italy stays alive against Swiss

WITHOUT Roger Federer, Switzerland lost in the doubles to Italy and had its lead cut to 2-1 in their Davis Cup semifinal in Geneva yesterday.
The Swiss decided to rest Federer and paired Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka with Marco Chiudinelli instead, and they lost 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6 against Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli at Palexpo indoor arena.
Federer, who played in the US Open semifinals last weekend, won his team’s first point on Friday by beating Bolelli in straight sets.
The Swiss No. 1 can clinch victory in the series against Fognini in today’s opening reverse singles match.
The winner plays France or two-time defending champion Czech Republic in the final on November 21-23.
In Paris, France took a 2-0 lead against the Czechs on Friday with Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga winning the singles.
Yesterday, the French duo was taking on Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek in the doubles.
In Perth, Australia, Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione put Australia back in the top-tier Davis Cup World Group for 2015 after beating Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin and Farrukh Dustov 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the doubles yesterday to give the host an unassailable 3-0 lead.
Australia, led by captain and former Davis Cup stalwart Pat Rafter, did not drop a set over the three matches. Nick Kyrgios beat Istomin 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 on Friday, followed by Hewitt defeating Dustov 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 on grass courts at the Cottesloe Tennis Club.
Australia lost to France in the first round of World Group play this year, its first appearance in the World Group since 2007. Australia has 29 Davis Cup wins, second only to the United States’ 32.
