Jankovic, Verdasco packed off in Beijing

THIRD seed Jelena Jankovic was sent packing from the China Open by Serbian compatriot Bojana Jovanovski yesterday after losing 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 in the second round.

"It was a tough game. My opponent played really well. She was very solid off the baseline and she really gave me a hard time. I felt that the court was quite slow, so you had to really play long points," said Jankovic.

World No. 4 Vera Zvonareva toiled to overcome Russian compatriot and former world No. 1 Dinara Safina 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the first round.

"Dinara is a great player. It is very difficult to expect to play your best tennis in the first match of a tournament," said Wimbledon and US Open finalist Zvonareva.

China's Shuai Peng crashed out in front of her home fans, beaten 6-1, 4-6, 1-6 by Italy's Sara Errani leaving Chinese hopes with the country's top female player and world No. 12 Li Na in Beijing.

There were also victories for Serbia's former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, who upset 11th-seeded Marion Bartoli of France 6-2, 6-3 and unseeded German Angelique Kerber, who outlasted an ailing Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, the sixth seed, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 7-5.

Nadia Petrova, the 13th seed from Russia, won her second round match by beating Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko 6-3, 7-5.

Danish world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki is headlining the women's competition and is two victories away from being propelled to the summit of the WTA rankings.

There were notable casualties in the men's tournament with fifth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych ousted 6-4, 5-7, 4-6 by German Michael Berrer while sixth seed Fernando Verdasco went down 2-6, 5-7 to another German Philip Kohlschreiber at the Olympic Tennis Center.

"I tried my best here but the feeling was not good," said Spaniard Verdasco.

In Tokyo, Juan Martin del Potro suffered his second defeat in two matches since returning from injury, losing 3-6, 0-6 to sixth-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain in the first round of the Japan Open.

The 2009 US Open champion lost to Olivier Rochus at the Thailand Open in his first appearance after eight months out with a wrist problem, and was comfortably beaten by Lopez on Monday.

"It's difficult to come back and play against these players, especially Feliciano on such a fast court," Del Potro said. "I need to work on a few things to get back to my best level. If I work in a good way, I will be in good shape in a month or so."

Lopez hit 11 aces and saved 11 of 12 break point opportunities to record his third straight win over Del Potro.

"When you are away for as long as Juan has been, it takes time to get back to your best level, but I have no doubt that he will be one of the top players again soon," Lopez said. "These courts really suit my style, they are very fast."

Elsewhere, Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver defeated Argentina's Eduardo Schwank 6-4, 6-4 while seventh-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia beat Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-4.

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal of Spain has a first-round bye and will play Colombia's Santiago Giraldo today in the second round.
