Juniors eye French Open chance
THE 2016 French Open Junior Wildcards Competition (China game) will be held in Shanghai from March 15 to 18, organizers announced on Monday.
A total of 24 Chinese players (12 boys and 12 girls), aged between 13 and 18, will slug it out at the Shanghai Kangdong Tennis Center in Xuhui District.
Apart from China, the competition for juniors is also being held in India, Japan, Brazil and South Korea.
Champions of each leg will gain entry to the tournament’s final phase to be held in Paris in May, and winners will enter the junior draw of the French Open at Roland Garros.
The China leg was first launched in 2014 in Beijing. It was held in Shanghai last year. Girls’ champion Ma Shuyue managed to win a wildcard to Roland Garros while boys’ winner Lyu Chengze missed out after losing to Brazil’s Gabriel Decamps in the junior tournament final in Paris.
The wildcard tournament is also part of the cooperation between the French Federation of Tennis and the Chinese Tennis Association to promote the development of tennis in China, especially on red clay. The two associations also have cooperation on coach exchanges and lectures on claycourt development and maintenance.
“Roland Garros is synonymous with red clay. More and more countries are building claycourts in hopes of training future champions on this surface,” FFT president Jean Gachassin said. “The junior wildcard tournament in China is a great achievement in building a bridge between Roland Garros and China, which I hope will continue for many years to come.”
