Kanepi denies Peng Brussels crown

UNSEEDED Kaia Kanepi of Estonia completed a dream run at the Brussels Open yesterday by upsetting Peng Shuai of China 6-2, 7-5 in the final.

Eighth-seeded Peng had earlier in the day defeated Swiss Romina Oprandi in a tough three-setter 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the semifinals while Kanepi had moved into the final by edging Jamie Hampton of the United States, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Peng, ranked 34th in the world, had reached the final here in 2011. Kanepi is 40th in the WTA rankings and reached the semifinals in Brussels last year.

All week, the claycourt tournament in the Belgian city was affected by rain, hail, cold and wind, forcing the semis and final to be played on the same day.

In Strasbourg, France? third-seeded Alize Cornet of France beat Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 7-6 (4), 6-0 to win the Strasbourg International final yesterday.

Hradecka saved two set points in the 10th game to force a tiebreaker. However, she doubled-faulted at 5-4 and Cornet took the set when Hradecka netted a forehand volley.

Cornet, runner-up last year, gave Hradecka little chance in the second set and clinched her third singles title when the Czech made a backhand error.

Hradecka has now lost all six finals she's played.

In Duesseldorf, Germany, Juan Monaco beat Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-3 to win the inaugural Power Horse Cup for his first title of the year yesterday.

The victory for the third-seeded Argentine gave him a boost ahead of the French Open which starts today.

Monaco won back-to-back matches at only three tournaments coming into Duesseldorf, but he did not drop a set in winning the eighth title of his career.

The Duesseldorf ATP event replaced the World Team Cup.
