JOHANNA Konta advanced to the semifinals of the Elite Trophy by beating Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-2 yesterday.
The top-seeded Briton converted four of five break points to eliminate Garcia of France and set up a semifinal against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. Third-seeded Petra Kvitova also advanced, beating fellow Czech Barbora Strycova 6-1, 6-4. The tournament in Zhuhai, south China’s Guangdong Province, features the 12 players on the tour who didn’t qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore last week.
