Konta, Kvitova win in Zhuhai

TOP-SEEDED Johanna Konta opened her Elite Trophy campaign by beating 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur 6-4, 6-2 yesterday.

Britain’s Konta broke Australian Stosur’s serve four times and dropped one service game in the Group A clash.

The tournament in Zhuhai, south China’s Guangdong Province, features the leading players on the women’s tour who didn’t qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore last week.

Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain withdrew because of a right wrist injury and was replaced by Hungary’s Timea Babos, who lost 4-6, 2-6 to Timea Bacsinszky in Group B. Swiss Bacsinszky rebounded from an opening loss to Chinese wildcard Zhang Shuai.

In Group C, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, the third-seeded Czech, brushed aside No. 5 seed Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-1, 6-2.

In Paris, France, Kei Nishikori advanced to the third round of the Paris Masters yesterday with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Viktor Troicki of Serbia.

The fifth-seeded Japanese, who made it to the semifinals at the indoor tournament two years ago, will be up against either France’s Jo-Wilfred Tsonga or Spaniard Albert Ramos Vinolas next.

Meanwhile, David Goffin kept alive his slim chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals. The Belgian beat Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (5), 6-3 but must win the title in Paris to clinch one of the remaining two spots at the season-ending tournament in London.

The eighth seed currently trails Austria’s Dominic Thiem, Marin Cilic of Croatia and Czech Tomas Berdych in the race for the final two places.
