Kuznetsova withdraws from LA event due to foot injury

FRENCH Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova has pulled out of next week's LA Women's Tennis Championships in Carson, California because of a foot injury, organisers said yesterday.

The Russian world number five, who beat compatriot Dinara Safina at Roland Garros to win her second grand slam singles title, has not appeared on the WTA circuit since losing in the third round at Wimbledon a month ago.

Despite Kuznetsova's absence, the LA Women's Tennis Championships have attracted 10 of the world's leading 15 players.

Top-ranked Safina and former world number ones Maria Sharapova of Russia and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia are also taking part in the Aug. 3-9 WTA event.
