Kvitova meets Bouchard in final
PETRA Kvitova and Eugenie Bouchard will stage a rematch of their one-sided Wimbledon final when they meet for the inaugural Wuhan Open title today.
Kvitova dominated Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 in 55 minutes to win her second Wimbledon trophy in July, in what was the most lopsided Wimbledon women’s final in 22 years.
They advanced with dominating performances in the semifinals in Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei Province, yesterday. Kvitova saved five of six break points to beat Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 7-5, while Bouchard overpowered Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki with her heavy groundstrokes in a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Kvitova will be aiming for her third title of the year — and victory in her 18th Tour final will seal her place in the year-ending WTA Finals in Singapore.
Bouchard will be going for just her second career title.
Kvitova lost her only previous meeting with Svitolina but was always the dominant player this time, winning the first set with ease and edging the second after surrendering an early break of service to the world No. 34.
At least a tournament plagued with falling seeds, withdrawals and retirements will enjoy a high-powered final.
After local heroine Li Na announced her retirement from the sport on the eve of the tournament, world No. 1 Serena Williams withdrew through illness and Maria Sharapova was bundled out by Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky.
Former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka also withdrew before the tournament started while second seed Simona Halep could not take to the court for her third-round match because of a stomach bug and Jelena Jankovic retired with a back injury.
In Guangdong Province, fourth-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain outlasted eighth-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3 to make the Shenzhen Open semifinals yesterday.
Robredo hit 19 aces in the 2-hour, 36-minute quarterfinal at Shenzhen Longgang Sports Center.
He will meet sixth-seeded Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, who beat qualifier Viktor Troicki of Serbia 7-6 (6), 6-3.
Second-seeded Andy Murray beat Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-3, 7-5 in the night match.
