Kvitova takes Madrid Open title
PETRA Kvitova claimed her third title of the year when she upset fourth seed Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the final of the Madrid Open yesterday.
The left-handed Czech 16th seed, who will break into the top 10 for the first time today, overpowered Belarussian Azarenka with some booming groundstrokes to add to her successes in Brisbane and Paris.
After winning the first set, the 21-year-old squandered a match point on the Azarenka serve at 5-3 in the second set but made no mistake a game later before raising both arms aloft in triumph.
Azarenka, who won the doubles title with Russian Maria Kirilenko on Saturday, will rise one place to No. 4 in the world when the rankings are updated today despite coming up short in her bid for a third title this season.
On Saturday, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer served up another treat in the 24th chapter of their great rivalry when Nadal battled back to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
The Spanish world No. 1, who replaced Switzerland's Federer at the top of the rankings, made the most of his opponent's lack of consistency to set up a meeting in the final against the seemingly unstoppable Novak Djokovic.
The Serbian second seed, who has not lost since Federer beat him at the World Tour Finals in November, also came from behind in a slugfest with Thomaz Bellucci later on Saturday, eventually subduing the unseeded Brazilian 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Djokovic's run of 31 wins in 2011 equals the second-best season start on record set by Swede Bjorn Borg in 1980 and his five titles this year include the Australian Open and the Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami.
