Kvitova wins as Czechs lead Germany in Fed Cup final
PETRA Kvitova handed the Czech Republic a 1-0 lead over Germany in the Fed Cup final in Prague yesterday after breezing past Andrea Petkovic in straight sets in the opening rubber.
Kvitova, the Czech No. 1 player, swept Germany’s No. 2 Petkovic 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 17 minutes. Lucie Safarova will next take on Angelique Kerber seeking to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
The Czechs are eying their third Fed Cup win in four years after lifting the trophy in 2011 and 2012. Germany is looking for its first title since 1992, when a team led by Steffi Graf and current captain Barbara Rittner won the title.
