Li Na storms into Danish quarterfinals
SECOND-SEEDED Li Na of China beat Elena Baltacha of Britain 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Danish Open.
Li broke her opponent three times and never lost serve in the second round of the inaugural event in Copenhagen.
In other second-round matches, seventh-seeded Klara Zakopalova of Czech Republic easily beat Tatjana Malek of Germany 6-0, 6-3, and No. 5 Julia Goerges beat fellow German Kristina Barrois 6-3, 6-2.
Goerges will next face the winner of second-round match between top-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki and Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic.
Also, eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany beat Czech player Sandra Zahlavova 6-4, 6-2.
In Carlsbad, California, Alisa Kleybanova beat No. 2 ranked Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-2 in the second round of the San Diego Open on Wednesday.
Jankovic, who has not played since an ankle injury two weeks ago, looked like she would have little trouble with Kleybanova when she broke the Russian's serve in the first and third games of the first set, and held her own serve for a 4-0 lead.
But the 28th-ranked Kleybanova stepped up her game and broke Jankovic to tie the set at 5-5 before holding her own serve and winning the set when the Serbian hit a backhand into the net. Kleybanova has four career wins against Top 5 players but never any ranked as high as Jankovic.
French Open finalist Samantha Stosur advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 second-round win over Melanie Oudin. Fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland defeated Russia's Dinara Safina 6-1, 6-3, and No. 7 Shahar Peer of Israel advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.
