Li advances easily in Warsaw
THIRD-SEEDED Li Na's run of good form on European clay continued when the Chinese beat Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 7-6 (4), 6-0 to reach the second round of the rain-disrupted Warsaw Open in Poland yesterday.
Li, coming off quarterfinals at Madrid and Stuttgart, and was tuning up well for the French Open, where she reached the last 16 last year.
Next up for Li will be Katarzyna Piter, who defeated another local wildcard, Marta Domachowska, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-5 in a match that was resumed from Monday, when rain halted play after two sets.
With heavy clouds hanging over the Legia Club, Tathiana Garbin of Italy defeated Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4 and another Czech, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, beat Andreja Klepac of Slovenia 6-3, 6-1.
Greta Arn of Hungary beat Petra Martic of Croatia 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in match that lasted just under three hours.
Rallied
In France, sixth-seeded Sybille Bammer of Austria rallied to beat Pauline Parmentier of France 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 yesterday and reach the second round of the Strasbourg International.
Julia Goerges of Germany and Dia Evtimova of Bulgaria also advanced. Goerges outlasted Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 to next face Bammer, while Evtimova defeated Tatjana Malek of Germany 6-4, 7-5.
The 267th-ranked Evtimova reached the second round of a WTA tour event for the first time in her career and will next play top-seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia.
Bammer led 4-0 in the final set but faltered as Parmentier won five straight games to get an opportunity to serve out the match. But a double-fault from the Frenchwoman helped Bammer level at 5-5.
Goerges trailed 5-1 in the second set but won eight straight games, and dominated the decider.
Fifth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain, Yvonne Meusburger of Austria and Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden also moved into the second round.
Medina Garrigues cruised past Sandra Zahlavova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-0, Meusburger beat Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-4, 6-3, and Arvidsson routed Jill Craybas of the United States 6-2, 6-1.
Craybas squandered her nine break points, while Arvidsson converted five of eight break chances.
