Li becomes first Chinese at WTA yearend event
LI Na yesterday became the fifth player to qualify for the prestigious TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 25-30, becoming the first Chinese singles player to book a spot at the WTA season-ending tournament.
"This year has been the most successful of my career so far and I'm very happy to have qualified," the French Open champion said. "I'm proud to be the first Chinese woman to qualify in singles for this event."
Li enjoyed a historic season in 2011, reaching two grand slam finals and taking the title at Roland Garros, Paris. She became the first player from Asia to capture a grand slam singles crown.
She also equaled the Asian-best world No. 4 ranking during the season.
"I congratulate Li Na on qualifying for the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships, marking a perfect end to her truly historic season," said Stacey Allaster, Chairman and CEO of the WTA.
Three places are still up for grabs with five players -- Vera Zvonareva, Samantha Stosur, Marion Bartoli, Andrea Petkovic and Agnieszka Radwanska -- fighting it out.
Istanbul is to be the host city of the WTA yearend finale through 2013. The event brings the top eight singles players and the top four doubles teams to compete for the US$5 million prize.
