Li hangs on to defeat Errani as Serena triumphs

China’s Li Na started the season ending WTA Championships with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory against Sara Errani of Italy yesterday in Istanbul, Turkey.

Fourth-seeded Li had a chance to close out a routine win when she served for the match a 5-4 in the second set, but Errani overcame a match point to eventually force a tiebreaker.

Li was the aggressor on most points, but too many unforced errors kept the sixth-seeded Italian in the match.

After falling behind early in the tiebreaker, Li built a 6-3 lead before closing it out on her fourth match point.

World No. 1 Serena Williams showed her determination to defend her title by sweeping to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Angelique Kerber on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old American broke early in each set and was too strong for the German, hitting 31 winners.

“Angelique is a great player and right from the start I knew I had to play really well to be able to win this match,” Williams said. “I feel really good.”

Williams has been drawn with Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova and Kerber in the red group at Istanbul’s Sinan Erdem dome.

Second seed Victoria Azarenka, Li, Errani and Jelena Jankovic are in the white group.

Also on Tuesday, Belarussian Azarenka beat Errani 7-6, 6-2.

“I was a little rusty at the beginning,” Azarenka said. “Overall it was important to take that first set. It was a big turnaround point.”
