Li sets up semifinal clash with Sharapova

China's Li Na set up an intriguing semifinal with second-seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia at the China Open in Beijing.

Li defeated third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-4, 6-2 yesterday. Sharapova beat sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber when the German retired with a right foot injury while trailing 6-0, 3-0.

"I thought we played a high level of tennis the first set and a half, and even though the scoreline was 6-0, 3-0, there were many games that went to deuce," Sharapova said.

The Russian has not dropped a set at the China Open.

No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus defeated Romina Oprandi of Switzerland 6-2, 6-0 and will play Marion Bartoli of France in the other semifinal. Bartoli beat Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.

Azarenka said: "I felt like I was playing well, and that's what gave me an advantage to go and play and have that scoreline after the match, but it wasn't easy."

Azarenka, who won the Australian Open this year, converted all six break points against Oprandi.

On the men's side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic barely broke sweat yesterday in winning 6-1, 6-2 against Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic will play unseeded Florian Mayer of Germany today. Mayer celebrated his 29th birthday yesterday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over China's Zhang Ze.

Also, third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France defeated Mikhail Yozhny of Russia 6-3, 6-2. Tsonga faces Spain's Feliciano Lopez, who defeated American Sam Querrey 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In Japan, defending champion and top-seeded Andy Murray moved into the semifinals of the Japan Open with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over seventh-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland yesterday in Tokyo.

Murray will play sixth-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada in the semifinals today. Raonic outlasted third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (7) in a match that took nearly 3 hours.

The other semifinal pits Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus against Japan's Kei Nishikori. Baghdatis defeated Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 6-2, 6-4. Nishikori upset second-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-4.
