Li starts with easy win in Shenzhen
TOP-SEEDED Li Na opened her Shenzhen Open campaign with a clinical 6-4, 6-0 victory over Mandy Minella of Luxembourg yesterday.
Li, ranked No. 7 in the world, will take on Julia Cohen of the United States in the second round. Eighth-seeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia could await Li in the quarterfinals after beating Duan Yingying of China 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.
Also, Zhou Yimiao of China started off with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jessica Pegula of the US.
In second-round matches, fifth-seeded Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic beat Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-4, 6-3, Monica Niculescu of Romania beat seventh-seeded Laura Robson of Britain 6-2, 6-3, and sixth-seeded Peng Shuai of China swept past Ayumi Morita of Japan for the seventh straight time, 6-1, 6-1.
It was a disappointing start for British teenage sensation Robson, who is seeking to break into the world top 50. The 18-year-old was seeded seventh in the tournament, and came into the contest ranked five places above her opponent.
The Shenzhen Open, carrying a total prize money of US$500,000, is being played for the first time as tennis expands in China on the back of Li's huge popularity.
In Auckland, world No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland swept past former champion Greta Arn 6-2, 6-2 to reach the second round of the ASB Classic.
The 23-year-old Radwanska took just over 70 minutes to overcome Arn, the 2011 champion now ranked 114, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser after being beaten in the last round of qualifying. At 1.72 meters and 56kg, Radwanska is one of the smaller players on the tour but she compensates with a game of touch and variety.
Arn was the second former champion to lose in the first round after 2012 champ Zheng Jie of China was beaten in straight sets on Monday.
Second-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany beat Latvian qualifier Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-4 in the last match of the first round. Goerges took the first set in just over 30 minutes but had to fight hard to take the second with a single service break.
