Magnolia blossoms on trophy

THE glittering championship trophy of the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 was unveiled yesterday afternoon following the draw.

The trophy is composed by eight pieces of highly polished pewter petals, which make it look like a blooming magnolia - the city flower of Shanghai.

The design of the trophy is derived from the main stadium of the Qizhong Tennis Center in suburban Minhang District, the tournament venue, according to Yang Yoon Li, general manager of Royal Selangor International, the sponsor of the trophy which also designed the trophies for the Formula One races in Malaysia and Singapore.

"Our director was particularly impressed by the roof of the stadium, which was constructed with eight synchronized panels and opens and closes like a camera iris," Yang revealed yesterday.

Yang added that the design of the trophy was contemporary yet oriental, combing the stadium's modernity and elegance with the excitement and power of tennis.

The trophy was chosen by fans online from among three cups presented by Royal Selangor.

More than 2,400 Netizens voted, with about 80 percent of them choosing the magnolia.

Like grand slam trophies, the Shanghai ATP Masters trophy will also be permanent with every champion's name inscribed on it. The champion will have to make do with a duplicate.

Spain's Rafael Nadal is the top seed at the tournament in the absence of Roger Federer, the Swiss world No. 1 having pulled out citing fatigue from a tough season.
