Maiden title for Goerges at Gastein
JULIA Goerges of Germany has won her first WTA Tour title by beating Timea Bacsinszky 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the Gastein Ladies in Bad Gastein, Austria, yesterday.
The 65th-ranked Goerges, playing in her maiden final, broke Bacsinszky three times and won the opening set when the second-seeded Swiss player double-faulted on set point.
Bacsinszky led 4-2 in the second set but then was broken twice as Goerges wrapped up the victory.
Earlier yesterday, Goerges beat France's Alize Cornet by the same score in a semifinal that was rescheduled from the previous day because of rain.
The 21-year-old Goerges, who had not played Bacsinszky before, lost to Flavia Pennetta in the last four of the Palermo Open last week.
The 52nd-ranked Bacsinszky reached her first final of the season on Saturday, defeating Austria's Yvonne Meusburger in three sets and was looking to win her second career title following her victory in Luxembourg in 2009.
The US$220,000 Gastein Ladies was the last claycourt tournament of the season.
In Johns Creek, Georgia, Mardy Fish extended his winning streak to nine matches by defeating top-seeded Andy Roddick 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Saturday to advance to the final of the Atlanta Tennis Championships.
Fish will meet compatriot and second seed John Isner in the final after the towering American overcame stifling heat to beat unseeded South African Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-3.
Sixth seeded Fish had a poor service game, making just 40 percent of his first serves, but saved all three break points and broke Roddick in the only chance he received.
"It's not something I try to do, but when I beat (Roger) Federer at Indian Wells I only served at 35 percent," Fish said.
Isner overcame seven break points and sweltering heat in his afternoon match against Anderson to advance to his fourth final of the year.
"The conditions were just brutal," he said. "It took a lot out of me (and) without clouds the sun was just beaming down."
