Malisse stuns Ferrer in Rosmalen opener
FRENCH Open losing finalist David Ferrer lost his first round match yesterday at the Topshelf Open, depriving him of valuable practice time on the grass courts of Rosmalen in the week before Wimbledon.
A single service break in the second set was enough for Xavier Malisse of Belgium to beat defending champion and top-seeded Ferrer of Spain, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
The top-seeded woman, 2011 champion Roberta Vinci of Italy, had no such problems, brushing aside Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-3 in the first match on center court to reach the second round in the Netherlands.
In Eastbourne, England, defending champion Tamira Paszek was forced to retire with a left thigh injury from her first-round match against 2009 champion Caroline Wozniacki at the Aegon International yesterday.
Wozniacki was leading 6-2, 2-2 when Paszek was forced off.
The Austrian, who was chasing her first win on the WTA tour since January, was broken at 3-2 and Denmark's Wozniacki then broke again to take the opening set. Paszek broke to lead 2-1 in the second set but then received treatment, lost her next service game and retired.
A single break of serve late in each set gave Australia's Bernard Tomic a 6-3, 6-4 victory over British wildcard James Ward.
