McEnroe: Nadal could become the greatest ever

ROGER Federer may have the most Grand Slam titles but tennis legend John McEnroe says Rafael Nadal is building a resume that could make him the greatest of all time.

Federer has won a record 16 Grand Slams, seven more than Nadal, and McEnroe isn't ruling out the 29-year-old Swiss adding a "couple more" to that tally.

However, Nadal has a 14-7 record against Federer, and has won the Davis Cup title with Spain and an Olympic singles gold medal - two achievements that have eluded his rival.

McEnroe says "there is an argument to be made that Rafael Nadal may be the greatest player eventually, even possibly now."

Former Swedish great Bjorn Borg says Federer is still the greatest though "Rafa has the chance to be the greatest player."

McEnroe also says there are few more impressive sights in sport than Federer in full flow on a tennis court but he can't compare with Nadal as an athlete.

Debate rages on over who is the better player but McEnroe said Nadal's only rival in terms of athleticism is his old sparring partner Bjorn Borg.

"The two greatest athletes of all time are Bjorn Borg and Rafael Nadal," the American said at a sports conference in Qatar.

Five-times Wimbledon champion Borg believes the Spaniard could maintain his dominance next season.

"He's still up there. If he stays healthy and motivated, he can sustain it for a long time," the Swede said.
