Muguruza, Kerber claim opening wins

Second-seeded Garbine Muguruza had a successful debut at the WTA Finals, beating Lucie Safarova 6-3, 7-6 (4) in their White Group opener yesterday.

The 22-year-old Muguruza is the first Spaniard to play in the WTA Finals since Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in 2001.

鈥淭o go here, and play and win for the first time, it鈥檚 great,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o I feel now more calm, more in the tournament.鈥

Muguruza lost to Safarova in the French Open quarterfinals, the only other time they have met.

鈥淚 remember the last match I played against her,鈥 Muguruza said. 鈥淚t was tough for me because I lost. I really wanted to go out on the court and try to win today.鈥

The Venezuela-born Muguruza served confidently in the match, raining down 10 aces, and controlled the baseline exchanges on the slower indoor hardcourt at the Singapore National Stadium to continue her strong form.

Muguruza reached her first grand slam final this year at Wimbledon, losing to Serena Williams in straight sets. She was the first Spanish woman to reach a grand slam final since Conchita Martinez lost the French Open final in 2000, and the first to do so at Wimbledon since Sanchez-Vicario in 1995 and 1996.

It was also a revenge win for Muguruza after she and Carla Suarez Navarro lost to Safarova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in their doubles opener on Sunday.

Sixth-seed Angelique Kerber defeated fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova 6-2, 7-6 (3) in the later White Group match for her second win in seven matches at the season-ending tournament.

It is Kerber鈥檚 third WTA Finals appearance but the German has yet to progress beyond the round-robin stage of the competition.

She raced through the first set, but looked to be in trouble in the second as Kvitova was twice up a service break, but the Czech couldn鈥檛 hold onto the advantage.

Kerber was broken when serving for the match at 5-4, but managed to secure victory in the tiebreaker.
